Question 62

What did your grandfather's do for a living?  Did your grandmothers work?

I have no idea about my "natural" grandparents.  Only my step grandparents.  However, I want to write this about my biological family so I'm going to need to talk to my mother about this.  I will update with my answer later. I wanted to get the question out....

Also, check out the Friday Five and start them in your own journal - it works just like the Journal Jar!

A long time ago, I think my grandmother did laundry for neighbors.  I was told that was how she met my grandfather who was 6 years her junior.  Later she did odd things from home like doing these foam parts that had to have certain holes punched out of them.

My grandfather worked in a coal mine until he developed black lung.  He then found work in Michigan working for Chrysler and retired from there a foreman.  I have a photo of him standing over a bin of parts.

Those were my maternal grandparents.  My paternal grandparents, my grandfather farmed but also made a living doing carpentry work.  I think that is where I get my mechanical inclination from.  I'm not sure about my grandma, but you gave me something to ask my dad about. :o)

My grandfather was manager of a large and prestigious hotel laundry.  My mother did even know how to wash clothes when she married! LOL

My grandmother was managerof a "haute couturier" ladies shop, and wore a hat and gloves to work!

Thanks so much for bringing back long forgotten memories

ROFLMAO.  You wouldn't believe me if I told you, ha but I will anyway and you can either take my word for it or not, lol.  My paternal grandfather (and grandmother) were immigrants here from Ireland. They had no clue what they would do here all they knew is this is where they wanted to be and raise their family. Unfortunately my paternal g/f died when my own father was 8 and my g/m succumbed to ovarian cancer when my father was 30 so I never met them at all and my dad died when I too was 8 so I never thought to ask, so for that side I honestly don't know.  Now here is where you will doubt what I say and that's fine but this is why my maternal grandparents got divorced and also why my mother and aunts had a strained relationship with their father, my g/f. His name was Jack (my son is a namesake) and he was an all out ruthless man.  He had ties to the local mafia and when I say ties I do mean ties, he owned several laundry mats where clothes weren't the only items being laundered, lol.  He had a kickboxing/martial studio and was just an all around criminal though one you would have never suspected, very well dressed, well educated and very articulate. He was super nice to us as grandkids though he did used to freak us out when he would want to show the "kids" his gun collection in his trunk, lol. My mom finally stopped allowing him to have contact with us because things were getting really bad and heated between the two of them. He was a pure and simple mess and he died at the young age of 54 just one year before my own dad died. And those are my grandparents.  Oh I did forget, my paternal grandmother never worked outside the home but once my grandfather passed she did start pressing clothes for people to help support her kids. My other grandmother worked for like 10 minutes before she met Mr. Seedy and then she has never worked again, lol.  Brandy

my mom's dad died when she was only 8 years old - so i never got to meet him- but he ran a hardware store, but he and my grandma dreamed of selling the business and buying a vacation resort in northern wisconsin- so that they could mix business with pleasure- they loved to fish!!! on my dad's side- he was an alcoholic and i really dont know what he did- he had a lot of different jobs- i rarely saw him-the only job i know for sure that he had was as a house painter.

i forgot to add the second part of the entry about the grandmothers- my grandma on my mom's side ran a hardware business and my grandmother on my dad's side did a variety of jobs- mostly cleaning houses or a hotel maid or working in the laundry at a nursing home.

My paternal grandfather, Guy, was an auto mechanic and saleman.  A few years he was on a pit crew at the Indy 500 race- I've got a picture of that I treasure.
I never knew my maternal grandfather- he and mom were estranged.
