Question 43 ~ Childhood slaves :)

Were you ever responsible for any chores?  What were they?

Preview I did a lot of chores when I was at home.  Me and my sister had to my dinner I think twice a week each.  I remember trying to be creative, but my cooking talents hadn't developed yet back then. I remember making pancakes one Sunday and the outsides looked great, the insides were not even done yet YUK.  I used to be so mad about having to cook, however, now I'm glad she had us do that because I know how to cook and people say I'm very good at it.  Also we had to take turns doing the dishes every other night.  I still hate washing dishes.
We also had to clean the house...For a while there was a time my Mom came up with this idea.. where she got it I don't know.  Whoever got the house done first.. or did the most on the house got the bigger allowance.  I was NOT a morning person and liked to sleep in on the weekends.  So my sister would get up early and get the house finished.  Guess who didn't get much of an allowance every week.  Of coarse I complained constantly because I was doing the other chores I was supposed to do, and I couldn't help it if my sister had no life YADA YADA YADA and went to bed early (sorry sis!!) lol.  So she ended up stopping that deal.  We went back to sharing the work and our allowances went back to normal.  Looking back we did a lot of work around the house.  Cleaning, cooking, dishes, yard work.  When my sister move out though things sort of changed, and I really only did the dishes and help clean a little on weekends, but I did have to do my own laundry (sometimes)  I guess when I became the only child I became spoiled .. only for a short time though.  The whip began to crack again the more I started to take advantage of it.  Oh well, it was sweet for a bit.

Sis and I were responsible for dishes and general cleaning.  I didn't mind helping with the laundry and ironing but my sister had this habit of intentionally splashing water on me when we were told to do dishes together.  I still hate doing dishes to this day.

My brother got off easy.  Double standards ruled in our house and we were told, "He's a boy, he doesn't have to clean."  Grrrr!  Sheila

Oh wow, growing up I felt responsible for everything. I had to babysit my two younger sisters, even taking them with me when I went to friends houses.  We lived in a two story walk up apartment..I had to sweep the two tiers of steps and the landings every Saturday, once a month they had to be washed.  I did dishes, I went shopping, of course our beds had to be made & the rooms cleaned too. I helped with the laundry, I did a heck of a lot...and thinking back...I never really minded it.  Work never killed anyone. When I moved out, my two younger sisters never had to do as much as I did...I think my Mom really missed me....Sandi http://journals.aol.com/sdoscher458/LifeIsFullOfSurprises

Shoorsr1. Did your brother have to mow the lawn? Or do other outside chores? My significant other does the dishes but I do the lawn etc. which takes FAR LONGER and Is FAR MORE PHYSICAL WORK!

i never got an allowance growing up and im glad- my parents believed that everyone needed to do their fair share and no one got paid for it. i was responsible for my room- god i used to piss my dad off so much on this one as a teenager- there would be clothes piled to the level of my mattress with only a path thru my room. i started working at 12- in the fields, baby sat alot, became a CNA at 16- so i always had my own money- i used to pay my younger sisters to clean my room. also when i couldnt get my sisters to work for me i used to drag the vaccuum cleaner to my room up stairs, turn it on and lay down to read a book- until they caught on to that- then i would walk around while i was reading and just leave the vaccuum running- they never got wise to that one. wasnt i awful??!! there were always dishes to do every night- tons of yard work and help with cooking, laundry- all of it- whatever mom needed. now that i am older- i turned into a neat freak, but my parents thought i was hopeless as a kid. ironically- my daughter is exactly the same as me when i was a kid- so there may be hope for her yet.

Ugh, don't be mad but I never had any chores...ZILCH!  I always kept my room clean, washed my own clothes, and not because I had to, but because I wanted to.  I'm so not that person anymore!  My Mom was reallly laid back...and I was/still spoiled.

chores????/ Oh boy did I the problem is where do I start!
lets see ill start at 5 .the summer times where very hard we (me and my brother ) were put in the field to buck hay .at first we both thru it on the truck together but not to long after we started we were chucking them by are selfs.when the long day was over ussally dark I had dusting and dishes to do while my parents wre on the town.
The dusting was more like a mommy dearest episode .I had to dust evrything but yet I had to make sure I had evrything in the exact spot it came from (and I mean exact) I swear she took a measuring tape and decided were evrything went because I rember the switch over one time it wasnt were it was suppose to go .
also I remeber scrubbing the floor on my hands and kness under the appliances until well in to midnight on a school night .
There wasnt any chore I wasnt to do but laundry and cooking(she was afraid Id break the applince) my list is to long so ill leave it at that

Actually I have fond memories of having to do the laundry.  For a time I used to live with just my father and I remember that to hook up the washing machine to the sink I first had to move the washing machine closer to the sink to hook up the hoses (this was around the '70's).  Oddly enough I can't remember whether we had a drying or whether I hung the clothes in the back yard.

I had to set the table when I was really little, and later, wash the floor in the kitchen and bathroom. When my Mom went to work, I had cooking chores. I like cooking though, always have. Still do.

It would be easier to ay what chore I didn't have because believe me the rest were all mine.  The only chores I did't perform was trash duty and I didn't do laundry but everything else and I mean everything was done all by me.

I learned how to do "everything", but I never had a lot to do on any one day.
