Question 39 ~ Movies

What do you think about movies and why?

I love movies, most movies.  I enjoy going to movies, but I usually wait for them to come out on DVD.. It's hard for me to concentrate at the movie theater. I really love the movie theater popcorn though.. that's one reason to go out to the movies lol.
Some movies amaze me, how they do the special affects, some movies scare me so I can never watch them alone. Some have me walking away with my head shaking... but there is always talent involved in any movie.... (except that movie "that darn cat" lol) Movies can take me away from my reality so I like that.  I like to watch documentaries also, keeps me learning.  I just don't seem to have as much time as I used to.  I have one of those online movie accounts, I've had the same three movies sitting here waiting for me to watch.  Good thing there isn't a late charge.

Love movies, hate commercials!  I'd much rather prefer to go to a theater though, for the popcorn and the experience of "the big screen".  At home, if we had the money, I'd subscribe to all 3 movie packages if I could.  One of the worst things I think, is when a movie goes from "uncut" to "network" t.v. with commercials every 3 minutes.  I will refuse to watch them.
You mention being scared of movies - I saw the first "Nightmare on Elm Street" by myself, an evening show, and I think I RAN to my car when I got out!!!!  LOL!  But I don't care for gory movies anymore.  I like comedies, romantic comedies, and action movies.  Of course anything with Mel Gibson is great too!  When we were little, my oldest cousin would take me, my sister and brother to the Detroit Institute of Arts as they would show old horror movies there.  It was great and I still love those old movies (so does my brother).  What a cool topic!  I'm going to have to see if anything good is on today!  Hugs! Some movies just have to be seen at the theater to get the full impact, like Star Wars and Jurassic Park, they have just GOT to be viewed larger than life, with the whole room vibrating with the sound effects and the action just popping out of the screen at you!  But, with a family as large as mine, we don't get to experience the theater as often as we'd like.  For those times we pop up some popcorn and turn on the surround sound in the den.  Saturday night is our family movie night.  We have found that for what we would spend at the theater on tickets, drinks and snacks for a one-time viewing, we can buy snacks, the ingredients for a good meal or order pizza, and get a new released DVD that we can watch over and over and over again.  Thats usually the route we take now days.  As for the variety, our favorites are comedies, then action/adventure (love Jet Li flicks and Vin Diesel), and for me.... horror movies!

Love to watch a good movie at home.  Can stop/pause if need be.  Can really be comfortable.  Hubby invested in a good sound system for our TV, which makes it awfully close to a theatre experience.

I like to go occasionally to the theatre, just in part to pass the experience on to my kids.  The small theatre in my hometown is one of the few remaining like it.  One screen,  a balcony.  The same man has managed it for I know 32 years.....probably longer.  Movies only cost a buck there.  But they will get you on popcorn and a coke! $$$$

I remember it being a big event when a really good show hit town!  People would turn out in droves and it was neat to know you where watching with neighbors and friends.  Some I recall are "True Grit" w/John Wayne,  "Smokey & the Bandit" w/Burt Reynolds.  I can remember all the grownups cheering "Walking Tall" - the original.  And the place had standing room only out to the street for "The Legend of Bogey Creek", about Big-foot.  The earliest show I can remember seeing is "Snow White."  And I can still hear my mother laughing at the silly antics of the kittens in "The Aristocats".

I experienced a few drive-in movies in my mid-teens.  No they are gone.  There is a firing range where the nearest drive-in once stood.  So I think it is good to pass on this link in the experience to our children.

This is a little off subject, but my aunties on Daddy's side of the family have always spoiled me rotten when they were around.  See I was Daddy's only child.  And they said they just had to give back.  They grew up dirt poor cotton farmers, 14 children and a widow!  When my dad was old enough to start earning money, he would take and treat his siblings to a "picture show" while he sat and waited on the curb outside.

I like movies; however, I do not like most "box office smashes" that are just ridiculous and unbelievable (like most action movies--"Hostage" and ilk like that.) Not to be a snob, but I prefer "films." I NEVER believe what movie critics say--they usually love what I think is horrible and vice versa. My fave movies are old ones. I'm a big fan of Turner Classic Movies, and most of my fave actors starred in these classics. I love Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart (always so cool.) Some current movies are good too, like "Lost In Translation," "The Ladykillers," and "Sideways," to name a few. I think my main problem with most current movies is that they are stupid, and they treat the audience as if they are stupid too.

I love a good movie. I love renting them, watching them on TV or even going to the theater. I think one of my favorites has to be "Chicago," although it bothered me that the movie was shot in Canada. I'm not much for chick flicks or action flicks. Usually I love anything to do with history. I enjoyed "King Arthur" tremendously, although I thought that "Troy" really sucked. I enjoyed The Patriot, The Last of the Mohicans, the Indiana Jones movies, Back to the Future movies, Apollo 13, Forest Gump, etc. I love John Wayne movies, Christmas movies, and anything that really makes you feel good at the end. I'm easy to please as long as it's a good story.

Thanks for the recent welcome!  :-)  I really enjoy movies, but so love the option of DVDs these days.  Often I want to see a movie, friends either already saw it or don't want to see it.  With the release in DVD I can sit in my fuzzy slippers and snack on my own munchies and I can get my favorites, too!

What do you think of movies and why?

Well, the last movie I saw in the theatre is Shark Tale. I hate the seats, but the popcorn is good. I like to rent movies more. You can turn down the lights, pull out the blankets, and eat popcorn at home. That way you can turn off the movie if it wasn't what you expected. Also, I don't have to get a babysitter, drive, and it is much cheaper. But if you all want to come to my house for a movie... I will only charge you half what theatres do, <not including popcorn or blankets, there is a different charge for those LOL >. Brandie

Movies are an escape.  It is somewhere to go to forget about where you are in your life.  I love a well written, directed movie.  One that you would buy and watch over and over. Stepmom, Ransom etc.

Movies are great, I love a good movie.  I don't like going out to the movies because A. too expensive and B. I like to be comfortable when I watch a movie i.e. wearing pjs or other comfy clothes, eat when I want, pause to go to the bathroom, etc. lol.
