Question 94 ~ Yards

Describe your yard as a child.  Did you help with yard work?

We moved around so much when I was young it would be tough to describe my yards.  However, I did have to help with rack the leafs and shoveling the snow. Usually racking turned into jumping through them and making more of a mess so we were told to get out of the way and my brothers would end up finishing it (we weren't dumb!) and shoveling turned into us taking to long and my brother's or step dad would end up doing it... once again proving we weren't dumb.

Wish we had grown up in the same place our whole childhood but oh well.

** You know the drill... you can answer in the comment sections, or your own journal.  If you are answering in your own journal please link your entry below so everyone can  enjoy your writing! If you're new to the journal jar please let us know that also! **

Glad to hear your Mom is doing well.
I grew up in the '60's. Lots in Chicago are long and narrow. We had a good size yard as compared to others. There was a tree in the middle, and it was surrounded by a white picket fence. My Dad had run electric throughout the entire yard. He used to work for the City in the electrical department. They were responsible for making the bulbs that were used on the Christmas tree in Daley Plaza. So he made us an entire set of these large colorful lights running throughout the yard. He also hooked up a radio out there so that we had music to listen to as we watched bond fires in the small, cinder block fire pit he built. My Mom grew flowers and cucumbers. She made sweet pickles every year. To this day, I still can't eat them. We also had a mulberry bush. I remember eating them straight from the tree. We had a bridal bush, and lilac trees. You know, I never realized just how nice it was.

Oh dear, as a child I lived in a rowhouse - cement and brick everywhere!  Now the backyard had cement on about 95% of it but there was this small patch of green grass growing.  Oddly enough I don't remember doing it but my mother told me that I used to water that little patch of grass and that my father kind of thought it kind of strange.

The backyard was the place to hang up clothes, the dog's domain and the occassional chit chat with my next door neighbor.

We moved around a lot too but, we always had love in our family, I can remember barbeques with family and fiends. Yes, and one time sitting in a hammack with friends and my Aunt living on the third floor. She used to drop cookies and candy down to us on the first floor. Sometimes she used to land some stuff on our heads but, we loved it anyway. Great Jornal! Thanks for making it.

i remember that my grandma had the biggest yard of anyone in my family, even though it was just an acre, and my sister and i spent a lot of time in that yard.  grandma watched us every day while my mother worked and we would run around there from the time we got back from school.  i don't think any yard work was actually required of us, but i do remember thinking it was very important for us to make bird's nest out of the freshly mowed grass.  i don't know why i thought it was important, but at the time, i instructed my sister, who was 2 1/2 years younger than me, that we had to complete at least a whole row.  we were going to monitor our nests over a short period to see how popular they were. i'm not sure if it ever caught on with the birds, or if our attention spans waned, but i worked really hard on those doggone things. umm, so did my sister, however unwillingly (and for good reason)                  jessica
