Question 15 - Our parents went to.....?

What church jobs have your parents had?  What do you remember about your parents and church?

It's funny because I just said something about this the other day.  My dad, who was a raging drunk (not my "step dad") wouldn't step foot in a church, not even for my wedding.  My mother on the other hand went... but only when she couldn't get out of it.  Somehow every Sunday as my Grandmother would come to pick us up for Church, my Mom came down with a headache, flu, toothache, anything that would get her out of going.  So my parents held no church jobs.  And they hardly went to church. They would preach about being good following the 10 commandments, but did not lead by example. My grandmother (Taresa) was the biggest spiritual influence on me.

Welcome to the new participants:  Popcorngirl1224, Baabyblueeyes, and Bubbles! Hope you enjoy the jar.

On a personal note: Lets all send our good thoughts and prayers to Kel so that she may be back soon!  Luv and miss you Kel

I believe my mom taught Sunday school for a while but she eventually dropped out of that church because the minister wouldn't marry her and dad because dad had been married before.  This wasn't even a Catholic church.  The minister was kind of crooked and and made the rules up as he went along.  Later, he had no problem in marrying one of my cousins, even though her groom had also been married and divorced.  So, our immediate family wasn't exactly religious as far as belonging to a church.  Sheila

I wasn`t brought to be very religious as such, but I was sent to Sunday school from the age of 5, and I attended church until I was 15.  My parents had very different beliefs and as such were not involved actively with the church.  I can truly say that though my mother was the more `religious` of my parents, my father was a far better person.   Sandra xxx

i was raised in a small methodist church- it was the one my grandparents, aunts and uncles attended also.because it was so small these people became family.  even though the church was small, it was very active in the community, so there were many jobs to be done. my parents and myself both served on many committees, administrative board, lay leader, and sunday school teacher. my sisters and i often sang, played piano or our instruments, were umyf members, participated in christmas or easter programs. while i was in college i taught sunday school and lead the umyf group myself. pretty much anything and everything. although i no longer attend there- my husband and children started going to a new church in 2000- this church will always be very dear to me- i was baptized there, grew up there, confirmed there, and married there. when my 22 month old daughter was very ill 1997, it was their support and prayers that carried me through. i still occasionally attend with my folks, my parents often take my kids with them to church. and we cant forget the yearly fall festival where i still come back and make and sell gourmet fries for an ENTIRE weekend for the church.  it is truly a labor of love!!!!

My parents were not very good examples of church goers when we were kids.
My aunt and uncle made sure we went.
As my mother got older in her 60's after my father died, she became more involved in church.
When I was a teenager, I was very tight with a local church. My parents didnt influence me to go, I just did it on my own.
I taught sunday school, I was in charge of the youth groups, I even gave the sermons on sunday when the minister was out of town.
Sadly, after my dad past away, I slowly left the church.
That I think was my biggest down fall.
It keep me somewhat grounded.
I wasnt an angel while I attended church, But without it in my life, I turned completly to the Devil.
I think if I had stayed in church, I might have turned out to be a better person.

I grew up in church, well actually I was about 9 when my parents started going to church. Both of my parents were Sunday School teachers, and my dad was an usher. This was a Baptist church and very old-fashioned hell-fire and brimstone style! We would go to church twice on Sundays and on Wednesday nights as well as revivals several times a year. I have since moved on in my life and do attend church now, but not every week, I am certain that some of the core values have stuck with me, if not all of the uptight beliefs. Unlike many of the people who attended that church I feel everyone is entitled to thier own beliefs, and that there is nothing wrong with diversity, in fact it is a very good thing!

my parents wernt into church my mother did go sometimes mostly at easter and funerals and weddings.and then shed go get high and drunk.
I always thought of church as a place where people pretended they were somthing that they wernt!!
As for a church job the closest my mother got was when  she called the minister in when i left home. That only happend once I told him what a child beater she was and that was that .

My mother was raised in the Southern Baptist tradition, but because she had been divorced (actually, my biological father left her for another woman) and remarried, she was not allowed to do anything in the church, not even teach Sunday school. (This is one reason church really turns me off--the hypocrisy. Didn't Jesus say, let he who has not sinned cast the first stone?)

My mother was also one of those do as I say not as I do people. She made certain that we went every Sunday but I can only think of maybe five times in my life that she went with us.  I think she forced us to go so she could have 2 1/2 hours to herself, lol.  She still won't go even though now her grandchildren beg her too.  She claims she gets too nervous around people, can anyone say mom is taking a copout?
